"al centro
de l’Italia ce sta l’Umbria, al centro de l’Umbria ce sta Fulignu,
al centro de Fulignu ce sta la piazza, al centro de questa ce sta 'l
bar, in mezz’ al bar c’è 'l biliardo e al centro del biliardo c’è 'l
birillo…quindi il birillo è 'l centro de lu munno"
(anonymous, popular traditional tale)
The History
Foligno is a medim sized
village that lays in Umbria to the East of Perugia and is part of
that province.
In local dialect you says
that "Fulignu" is at the centre of the world just because of its
being at the centre of all other Umbrian towns and however being
Umbria itself just at the centre of the "boot-shaped" Italian
Country".
Even a local tale (always
in local dialect) uses to find out even the real centre of the
world.
After finding the
geographic position of Foligno by humour you can proceed in knowing
its food and wine exquisiteness. |

The Palazzo Comunale and the Sala Consiliare (Commune
Palace – Council Hall)
The Commune Palace as you
know it nowadays was born in 1568 by the architect Matteo Scarscioni
over the place where previous ruins of the Priors’ building were.
At that time the
fireplace, the cappella, the well and the major Door were finished.
The actual façade id dated
of 1835 and was built by Antonio Mollari.
Some following plans of
recovering would be never done and after the First World War some
re-building works were necessary because of the destruction that
occurred by bombs falling. | |
|
Nowadays some important
recovering and consolidation works are ahead after the well known
earthquake disaster of 1997. In 1883-87 eve Mariano Piervittori
decorates the Sala Consiliare (Council Hall).
A pavillon vault preserves at its centre 4 female
shapes representing: Wiseness, Justice, Force and Prudence that are
to superintend the good government of Res Publica (Republic). Among
the webs there are always 12 female figures representing the arts
the sciences and techniques; beneath them, in the lunettes there are
16 Foligno well known people.
At the walls, inside rich arras, there are three
great paintings portraying events and characters of Foligno history. |

The Trinci
Palace
As well as regarding the Commune Palace
the former was the result of recoverings of previous buildings that
Ugolino Trinci had done between 1389 nd 1407 and was the seat of the
homonymous family who had reigned in that town since 1305 to 1439.
A great part of frescoes that embellish
the rooms were painted by Gentile da Fabriano and mostly celebrate
the arts and grandeur and the beauty of the Capital town: Roma.
Even the Museo della Città has a great
importance and starting from the gothic stairs aside the Trinci
Palace guides the visitor among the sculptures and paintings that
mark the various eves lived by that town.
In Piazza della Repubblica there is the
Cathedral, dvoted to the cult of the martyr Feliciano, the bishop of
Foligno who died in 3rd century after Christ and preserves some
important contributions inside by such artists as: Lorenzo Bernini
and Gianluigi Vanvitelli (each of them well known for the Colonnade
in Saint Peter Circle in the City of Vatican and the Caserta
Palace).
The Cathedral was born over a previous
basilica built up about in the year 1000 to adorate the Bishop’s
vestments who has its tomb there.

"Tasting" Foligno's territory
Foligno lays between the
Parks of Subasio and Colfiorito
Mountains. From those lands it takes the best of
traditional agriculture food products in order to offer what the
Umbrian food tradition has best preserved in time.
Foligno, as far as the wine production is
concerned, is a neutral land as well as the Helvetic Confederation
can be inside Europe (so to see it in a larger scale), it is out of
the main routes of the associations of Umbrian Wine
roads: Cantico, Montefalco,
Etrusco Romana and Colli del Trasimeno but from the
first two it "borrows" and amuses itself with two very respectful
DOC and DOCG ("Cantico" DOC wine, Sagrantino "Rosso" DOC wine e
"Montefalco Sagrantino" DOCG wine).
From Cannara it exploits the traditional production
of onions in the 4 species produced, from Colfiorito the famous
potatoes (whose quality is higher as they "go down" to the valley)
and from Trevi the black chicory besides of the Extra Virgin Olive
Oil from the unique DOP ("Umbria") that express itself at its best
in that part of the Region.
The High Tevere Valley, the Subasio and Colfiorito Parks and
the High Chiascio area close to which Foligno
lays give to that the excellent Precious White Truffle too
(Tuber Magnatum Pico). |
