The Commune
In the historical centre a medieval castle is
perfectly preserved; in 2003 Corciano has been certified as one of
the most beautiful burghs in Italy, only 12 km far from Perugia and
10 km far from the Trasimeno Lake as a guardian to the passage of
the valley that links the Trasimeno area to the Tuscan Tevere
Valley. Corciano has got everything thanks to whick the whole Umbria
Region is known and loved all over the world: the nature, the art,
the history, the traditions and gastronomy. |

While walking through the town walls In Corciano,
you can enjoy a wide landscape that goes by the Monte Amiata to
Monte Peglia, to Todi, by the Trasimeno Hills to the mounts Tezio
and Acuto; the dominant Malbe mountaintop is over everithing
above.
Historical data
According to an araldic legend preserved in the
Vatican Code 4834 Corciano was founded by Coragino, the friend of
Ulysses; according to some Perusian historians the town comes from
Ciano Razzeano, the son of Giano – thus the popular tradition states
that "Corciano" means "Cuore di Giano" ("Heart of Giano"); according
to other sources the name is the result of the corruption of a roman
person – Curtius or Coricius or Corisius – by which some lands were
indicated as the ones placed "in loco et vocabolo Corciano" ("in the
site and name of Corciano"). Certainly the sunny and quiet town was
an active centre already in the Etruscan-Roman eve and that is
witnessed by the presence of the Strozzacapponi Necropolis (III – I
century before Christ), the two lions in travertine placed in Piazza
dei Caduti and several others archeological remainings preserved by
the Commune Palace. | |
|
Nowadays as it is still surrounded by powerful
walls, it lays over many medieval castles and guardian towers all
placed in the shape of an amphitheatre around Malbe Mountain (652
metres above sea level) that nowadays constitute the seven divisions
of the Commune jurisdiction: Capocavallo, Castelvieto, Chiugiana,
Mantignana, Migiana, San Mariano, Solomeo.
The Castle of Pieve del
Vescovo
The majestic castle with the 4 big angle towers
lays at 1 km far from Corciano in an area where vineyards are grown
upon the top that dominates the Caina river plain. It seems that
Frederick 1st lived there while Spoleto was going to be destroyed.
The last bishop who lived there was Gioacchino
Pecci who then became a Pope under the name of Leone 13th and stood
there until 1878. |
